Hot take: I stacked 40 shots of Andromeda before a guy at the Tulsa astronomy club told me to throw out half of them
I'd been shooting M31 from my backyard in Tulsa for a few weeks and proudly posted a 40 frame stack, thinking more data always wins. A guy at our club meeting pulled up my photo on his phone, zoomed in on the core, and said the bloated stars in my last 12 subs from that hazy Friday were smearing detail, not adding it. I re-stacked using only the 28 sharpest frames and the dust lanes in the galaxy popped way harder than they ever did before. Now I check each sub at full zoom before it goes in the stack instead of dumping everything into DeepSkyStacker. Anyone else cull frames that hard, or am I just tossing out good photons?
