I heard a guy at the star party say 'processing is cheating' and I had to bite my tongue

He was looking at a deep sky image of the Veil Nebula I took from my backyard in Flagstaff and said the colors were too good to be real. He insisted that any photo not straight from the sensor was fake. I spent over 15 hours on that stack, carefully pulling out details that are absolutely there but too faint for our eyes. It's not making things up, it's showing what the light actually captured. Does anyone else get tired of this 'purist' view of astrophotography?

That "purist" view drives me nuts too, it totally misses the point of the work.

Yeah the "misses the point" part nails it... feels like people do this everywhere now, like judging a movie by one scene without watching the whole thing.

Purists are like people who only eat the bread crust and say they had a sandwich lol.

So he thinks your sensor sees in color like our eyes do?
