My uncle pointed at Orion from his driveway in Reno and I finally understood why he photographs it every winter
Visited my uncle in Reno back in January and he dragged me outside at 11pm to look at Orion through his little 8 inch dob. He didn't say much, just "see how the belt sits right in the middle, like a buckle" and then went quiet for a bit. I'd seen the constellation a million times but never noticed the faint pink glow around the sword until he pointed it out. Now I catch myself checking where Orion is every clear night, even from my own driveway. Anyone here shoot it with a basic DSLR, or is a tracker pretty much required for the nebula to show up?
A basic DSLR on a tripod will get you the nebula just fine, no tracker needed. Stack a bunch of 2 second shots and the pink shows up, people have been doing it that way for years. The tracker just makes it easier, it isn't some magic gate you have to pass through.
