One clear night last July gave me 14 keepers, then a whole week of clouds

I was camping near Big Bend with my old 8 inch Dobsonian and the Milky Way was so sharp I could see dust lanes with my naked eye, but then a cold front rolled in and we got seven straight nights of overcast where I just sat by the fire staring at nothing. That one Saturday made up for the whole week and got me thinking about whether those rare perfect nights are worth the long dry spells we all deal with. Do you guys plan trips around forecast windows or just accept the bad luck and hope for a single good hour?
