Pro tip: tried my webcam on Jupiter against my neighbor's 8 inch dob and I feel dumb
Last Tuesday I set up in my driveway in Tucson with my junky webcam strapped to a 90mm refractor, mostly just messing around while my neighbor had his 8 inch dob out. His shot of Jupiter actually showed the cloud bands and the Great Red Spot as a clear oval, while mine was a bright white blob with maybe two faint stripes if I squinted. I spent about 40 minutes stacking 900 frames and still got less detail than his single 2 minute video, and he didn't even mess with his settings much. Turns out it wasn't the camera at all, it was the aperture and the fact that my tripod shakes when a car drives by. Now I'm sitting here wondering if I should just save up for a used 6 inch scope instead of dumping more time into the webcam. Has anyone gotten decent planet shots with a small refractor, or am I just wasting clear nights?
