Shoutout to the guy in Phoenix who showed me why stacking 200 subs beats 20 long ones
I used to shoot 20 long exposures at 4 minutes each for every deep sky target, thinking more time per frame meant cleaner data. A guy at a star party near Phoenix last April watched me throw out half my frames and asked why I wasn't stacking 200 short ones instead. I tried it two nights later on M51, 200 frames at 30 seconds, and the noise basically vanished while my stars stayed round. Turns out my mount drifts just enough that anything past 2 minutes smears the faint stuff, and I never caught it because I blamed my processing. My keep rate went from about 40 percent to 90 percent overnight. What frame lengths are you all running on setups that aren't perfectly polar aligned?
