That $60 moon filter I bought was a total waste of money
I picked up a so-called 'high contrast' moon filter from a shop online for $60 and it just made the whole image look hazy and blue. A seasoned astrophotographer at my local club told me I'd have been better off just adjusting my camera settings. Has anyone else had luck with a specific filter or am I right to skip them entirely?

Man that really stinks... $60 is a lot to drop on something that doesn't work. I've been burned by gear like that before and it's just frustrating when you trust a product and it lets you down. Guys at my local club say the same thing about filters for moon shots, they're mostly a gimmick from what I've seen. Honestly you're probably better off skipping them and just playing with your settings instead.

A lot of those moon filters are just neutral density filters in disguise. $60 could have bought you a solid ND filter that works for daytime long exposures too. Next time just try cranking your shutter speed way down and lowering your ISO first, see what you get for free before spending anything.

Yeah club guys are usually right about most of this stuff, filters are more hype than help.
