TIL picking between a cheap zoom lens and a used 80mm refractor for moon shots
Last month I wanted to get better moon photos from my backyard here in Boise, and I had about $400 to spend. My two choices were a used 70-300mm zoom for my camera or a small 80mm refractor on a basic mount from a guy in the local club. I went with the refractor since everyone kept saying glass beats zoom for this stuff. Turns out the mount was the weak link and the moon wobbled on every shot until I added a cheap tracking motor two weeks later. Now I get a sharp full disc at 1200 frames stacked in Autostakkert, way better than my old zoom shots. Curious what others here use for lunar work, is a tracking mount a must for you or do you just stack more frames?
