Had a total flip on which local farmers market to go to
I was dead set on the Piedmont Park market for like two years. Always thought the one at Oakhurst was too small and not worth the drive from Midtown. Then my neighbor brought over some peaches from Oakhurst last Saturday and they were way better than anything I'd gotten at Piedmont. Went there this morning and the crowd was half the size, prices were lower, and I found a guy selling homemade sourdough starter for $3. Anyone else find a smaller market that beats the big one?

Can't believe you got sourdough starter for three bucks. I've seen people selling jars of that stuff for like fifteen or twenty dollars at some of the bigger markets around town. That's highway robbery and you found a total deal. Seems like the smaller spots really let the regular folks shine instead of just the fancy vendors.

Tbh I had the same thing happen at a small market near my place in Decatur. Paid four bucks for a jar of starter from an old guy who gave me a whole page of tips on how to keep it alive. @casey268 you're right about actually talking to the baker, that guy even remembered my name the next time I came back.

The part about "regular folks instead of just the fancy vendors" really hits it for me. I think there's another angle people miss about these smaller markets though. The big ones have become almost like a weekend event you have to schedule around, with the crowds and the parking and the whole production. A smaller market like Oakhurst feels more like just buying food from your neighbors. And that sourdough starter deal you got, that's exactly the kind of thing that disappears when a market gets too popular. Vendors at the big spots know they can charge whatever because they have the foot traffic. The little guy at a smaller market is just trying to move his stuff and make a connection. Plus you get to actually talk to the baker or farmer instead of some college kid working the register.
