Took me 4 hours to swap a single kitchen faucet because of one dumb mistake

I decided to replace my old kitchen faucet last Saturday. Figured it would be a quick 30 minute job, maybe an hour tops. Got the new one from Home Depot for like 80 bucks. I took the old one off fine, but then I spent two hours wrestling with the supply lines because I forgot to shut off the water at the right valve. Water spraying everywhere, had to mop up the floor. Then another hour trying to get the new faucet's nuts tightened under the sink because my hands are too big to fit back there. By the time I finished, my back hurt and I had used up half a roll of paper towels. Anyone else have a simple home repair turn into a half day project?

Did you actually check the supply valve before you started turning it off or just assume it was the right one? That's the part I don't get, because most sinks have those little turns under the cabinet that are labeled hot and cold. Also, what size were the nuts you were trying to tighten? I've got big hands too and I bought a basin wrench from Harbor Freight for like 12 bucks after my second faucet job destroyed my knuckles.

Haha oh man that reminds me of my buddy Jake. Tried to fix his garbage disposal and ended up flooding his whole kitchen because he forgot to unplug it first. He said water shot up like a fountain and his wife just stood there with the camera laughing.
