Tried two different fertilizers for my lawn this spring

I been working on my front yard in Decatur for a while now and wanted to see if the expensive stuff was really worth it. Used a big name brand on the left side and a generic store brand on the right side back in March. By June the difference was obvious. The cheap side was patchy and full of weeds while the name brand side was thick and green. Cost me like $15 more for the bag but I saved money not having to reseed or buy weed killer after. My neighbor actually asked what I used on the good side cause his yard looked like my bad side. Anyone else tried side by side tests like this or am I just a nerd about grass?

Bought a bag of the cheap stuff one time and REGRETTED it so bad. The grass came in all yellow and thin, looked like I had a dirt patch with some sad weeds poking through. Meanwhile my buddy used the same brand you mentioned and his lawn looked like a golf course green. I ended up spending twice as much on extra seed and weed killer just to fix my mess. Never again, you get what you pay for with lawn stuff for SURE.

Hold on, am I the only one who had the exact opposite experience? I tried that name brand stuff a couple years back and all it did was burn my grass to a crisp because I put it down wrong, then I had to redo the whole section. The generic store brand I got was way more forgiving, and when I followed the directions it gave me a decent lawn without all the extra cost. Maybe I just got lucky or maybe the name brand stuff is too strong for normal people who don't know what they're doing. Seems like half the battle is just reading the bag and not dumping a ton on.

Yeah the bag directions really are the key here, most people just dump it on without measuring. The name brand stuff is fine if you follow the instructions to the letter, but it's way easier to mess up if you're not careful. Generic stuff being more forgiving makes sense for sure.

Man @the_rowan is totally right, cheap fertilizer is a straight up scam.
