Warning: That rent increase notice showed up with zero warning

I used to just pay rent the first of every month without even looking at the email. Then about 3 months ago my landlord slipped in a $150 increase buried in a message about maintenance. Now I read every single notice like it's a contract, even the ones that seem routine. Has anyone else had a landlord sneak a change into a random email?

I read this article last month about how streaming services quietly swap out movie versions without telling anyone.
