Got burned at a Peachtree Corners meetup last week
Some guy spent 20 minutes promising me a referral to a big tech firm, then ghosted me the second I handed him my card. Has anyone else had people at these in-person mixers just waste your time for free drinks and nothing else?

I always keep my card in my pocket until someone actually sends the referral, learned that the hard way.

Buddy of mine did the same thing - handed his card to a guy at a car meet who seemed legit. Next thing he knows, his checking account is drained and the guy is posting fake reviews using his name. Took him months to sort out the fraud with the bank and he still gets spam calls from that one mistake. He even had to change his phone number because the guy put it on some lead generation site. Real nightmare stuff.

Three years chasing collections on a guy who ran a complete identity scheme from a single business card handed at a networking event. He wasn't just posting fake reviews, he opened credit cards and took out a small business loan using the victim's info. Bank fraud teams were absolutely useless, took them six months to even freeze the accounts because the guy had fake IDs matching all the stolen details. The phone number thing is the real kicker though, that lead gen stuff stays up forever even after you prove fraud. I file disputes for clients who still get calls from lists sold ten years ago. Respectfully, I see handing out cards as playing with fire every single time.
