Heard a guy at a Peachtree Corners meetup say networking events are a waste of time

I was at a small tech meetup off Peachtree Industrial last Thursday and overheard this dude telling his friend that all these events are useless because nobody actually follows up. He said he went to 10 events in 3 months and got zero real connections out of it. That made me think about how I handle things differently. I always send a quick LinkedIn message within 24 hours and mention something specific we talked about. Last year I met a guy at a similar event who ended up referring me a contract worth $4,500. Has anyone else found a specific follow up method that actually works for them?

Yeah that part about follow up is key. I started sending a quick text or DM the same night just saying "good meeting you" and it made a huge difference. Most people just don't do anything after the event and that's why they think it's useless.

The follow up is everything. I met a guy at a meetup in Buckhead, sent him a LinkedIn message later that night about the podcast he mentioned, and he ended up introducing me to someone who hired me for a $2,000 project two weeks later. Do you find it better to send that message the same night or the next morning?
