Overheard at Octane Coffee: someone said they get 90% of their referrals from just two people in a monthly meetup

I was grabbing a latte last Thursday and this guy at the next table was telling his friend that almost all his work comes from two folks he sees once a month at some Atlanta tech meetup. Made me think I might be spreading myself too thin hitting five different events every week. Anyone else found that focusing on just one or two groups paid off better?

Did you read that HubSpot study about referral concentration being super narrow?

Ngl that HubSpot study blew my mind when I read it. Like, I remember seeing that number about how like 80 percent of referrals come from just 20 percent of your contacts or something wild like that? Honestly it makes total sense though when you think about it. I've got a cousin who's a realtor and he's been saying the same thing for years, he literally only keeps in touch with like five past clients and that's where all his new business comes from. Tbh most people probably have way too many shallow connections that aren't doing anything for them.

Roll up to your 6th networking event of the week and realize you've collected 47 business cards and zero real conversations. That guy at Octane is probably onto something. I spent a whole year running around to every single event in town and my referral pipeline looked like a half empty glass of water. Meanwhile my buddy just goes to the same two boring meetups every month and he's drowning in client work. Maybe the secret is just finding the right two people who actually remember your name past the nametag. Who knew quality over quantity actually meant something in real life?
