Two network switches, one flaky part of town, here's what I picked

I had to run a small office setup off Piedmont Road and had to choose between a $200 unmanaged switch and a $450 managed one. I went with the managed one because the building had a history of power flickers and I wanted logs. Three days in, a surge took out the upstream router but the switch rebooted clean and logged the whole thing. The extra $250 paid for itself in one phone call to the landlord. Has anyone else found that paying for diagnostics beats paying for downtime on older commercial strips?
