Weirdest thing happened at The Vortex in Little Five Points

Went for lunch there last Tuesday and saw a guy doing a full sales pitch to a buddy over onion rings. He was literally holding a napkin with wire diagrams drawn on it for some kind of mesh network setup. The server came by twice and he just waved her off without looking up. I almost asked if he needed help but figured it was better to just eat my burger and laugh to myself. Anyone else run into people networking in weird spots around town?

Always figured that was just desperation but maybe it actually works.

Read somewhere that this is actually a thing called "ambush networking" where people hit up random spots instead of going to boring meetups. I guess the idea is you catch people off guard and they remember you more? Saw a whole article about this guy who did his best deals at a laundromat, just talking to strangers while folding socks. Probably works better than those awkward Chamber of Commerce mixers where everyone's just staring at name tags. Your onion ring guy sounds like he's on to something, even if the server probably wanted to strangle him.

Yeah the "catch people off guard" part is the whole trick. Laundromat deals sound ridiculous but honestly those boring mixer events are way worse. At least at a bar you've got a built-in buffer if things get awkward.
