Why does every networking event in Atlanta turn into a sales pitch?

I went to a 'casual mixer' last week at that new spot in Buckhead. Paid $25 for entry, and within 10 minutes, three different people tried to sell me their marketing services. I just wanted to talk about shared interests, not get bombarded with pitches. Has anyone else noticed this trend at local meetups?

Figured I'd escape sales pitches at a mixer but nope, my own reflection tried selling me insurance in the bathroom mirror.

Everywhere you go now people are trying to sell you something... even at the grocery store. I swear the checkout lines have turned into mini infomercials with the way they push loyalty cards and store apps at you. Same thing at the gas station, they want you to sign up for their car wash membership before you can even pay. It's like nobody can just have a normal conversation anymore without turning it into a transaction.

and you know what gets me MORE than that? i was at the dentist office last week and while i'm sitting there with my mouth wide open they're trying to get me to sign up for their "smile rewards program" like i can even TALK to say no. it's getting ridiculous. i remember when a cashier would just scan your stuff and say have a nice day, now they're asking for your phone number and email before you can even pay. and don't get me started on the gas station thing you mentioned, the other day i just wanted to pump gas and the screen asked me if i wanted to donate to charity, join their rewards, and buy a car wash all before i could even select regular unleaded. like please just let me buy my milk and get out of there.
