Am I the only one who thinks filler over bare metal is fine if you do it right
Everyone in my shop acts like putting filler straight on bare metal is a sin. I keep hearing you have to epoxy first or it will rust from behind and fail in a year. Well I did a fender on a 2006 Silverado last spring, sanded to bare steel, cleaned it with wax and grease remover, then laid Rage Gold right on it. That truck has been through two winters here in Rochester with the road salt and the filler is still stuck solid, no bubbles, no rust lines. I get why epoxy is the safe bet on big panels or rust repairs, but on a small dent with clean metal and a good 36 grit scratch, filler bites hard and holds. The key is you have to actually clean the metal and not touch it with your bare hands after. So is everyone just repeating what they read online, or has someone here actually seen a bare metal filler job fail on its own? I want to know what really went wrong, not just the rumor.
