Appreciation post: I picked a 3M sanding block over a cheap sponge for a quarter panel and the finish was way smoother.
I had to choose between a cheap sponge or a 3M sanding block for a 2020 Honda Accord quarter panel, and the block gave me a much smoother finish for the primer coat.

Oh man, that's the best feeling! It's crazy how much the right tool makes a difference, even on something that seems simple. I've totally been there with the cheap sponge and the rough finish. Spending a little more on the good block is always worth it for that smooth result.

@garcia.mila I get what you're saying, but sometimes the cheap sponge gets the job done just fine. Not everything needs the fancy version. A rough finish can add some character, you know? It's easy to get caught up in buying the "right" tool when the basic one works. Saving that money can be better for your wallet in the long run.

Yeah, the "rough finish can add some character" part really hits home... I've kept some pieces I did with a basic sponge just because the texture felt more real. But @garcia.mila is also right that the right tool changes the game when you want it smooth. It's like having both options in your kit lets you choose the feel you're going for, instead of being stuck with one result. Sometimes the cheap sponge is the right tool, just for a different job.

Finley, you nailed it with "sometimes the cheap sponge is the right tool, just for a different job." I've got this one little piece I did with a dollar store sponge that has this bumpy, organic feel, and it honestly looks like I planned it that way. Meanwhile, I've tried to get a smooth finish with the same cheap sponge and ended up with a mess that looked like I used a dish scrubber. It's a good reminder that I'm not a master craftsman, just someone who occasionally gets lucky with a bargain tool.
