Guy rolls up to my shop in Ohio last Tuesday with a half-rotted deer in his truck bed, says his fender got hit and he wants the color matched to the animal's fur. I thought he was joking until he pointed at a spot behind the ear and said 'that exact shade.' I ended up grabbing a sample from the hide with my camera and honestly the paint turned out perfect, but now I'm wondering if I should add 'organic color matching' to my price list. Anyone else had a request that made you question your whole career path?
That "exact shade" behind the ear thing is real, deer fur shifts a lot depending on the light and where you pull from. Next time grab your sample from the backstrap or shoulder area instead, since the ear spot fades fast once the hide dries out. As for the price list, call it custom color matching and charge your normal rate, because once word gets out you'll have hunters lined up with all kinds of weird requests.
