Just realized the moral tightrope of cash jobs for minor damage

A guy brought in his truck with a scratched bumper last week. He offered cash to fix it without any paperwork, saying his deductible was too high. Part of me wanted to help him out, but I started thinking about liability. What if something went wrong later and he had no proof of repair? I told him I'd do it but with a receipt and basic records. It felt like walking a line between being helpful and covering my own back.

Seen this same thing with freelancers doing website fixes under the table. It's always a gamble skipping the paper trail, even for small stuff. What other kinds of work do you see this happening with?

Does this happen a lot with local handymen doing cash jobs for small home repairs? I've seen friends pay landscapers under the table to save time, but it backfires if there's a dispute. Same with babysitting or tutoring where parents just hand over cash. It's a pattern where trusting relationships often replace formal agreements.

What about the worker's side in these deals? They get stiffed on pay with zero proof it ever happened. No paper trail means they can't claim that income for a loan or even social security later. Seen it hurt folks when they need to show steady work history. That trust goes both ways and often leaves them holding the bag.
