That $12 masking tape gamble paid off on a pearl white hood today

So I had this pearl white Escalade hood to blend today and my usual 3M tape kept lifting on the edges no matter what I did. I was about to redo the whole damn masking job for the third time when the parts guy from down the street told me to try the cheap yellow tape from Harbor Freight. I laughed but figured why not, it was $12 for 6 rolls. That tape stuck like glue on the curves and I finished the blend in 20 minutes flat, no bleed through. I have been doing this for 15 years and I can't believe the cheap stuff beat the fancy tape. Has anyone else found oddball gear that works better than the pro brands for specific paint jobs?
