100k miles on a junkyard 5.3 and it still runs better than my rebuilt one
I got 118k on a $450 pull-out from a wrecked 2003 Silverado and it doesnt even tick. My buddy's fresh rebuild with all new parts has had two lifter failures in 6 months, makes me wonder if we overthink this stuff sometimes. Anyone else have old junk outlast their careful work?

Figure out what the previous owner did to keep that thing alive before touching anything else. Sometimes the "junk" engine has had 100k of easy highway miles and the rebuild got daily redline abuse.

Exactly right, @anthony_jackson31. It's way too easy to judge a motor by how it looks on the outside, but the real story is in the oil change history and how it was driven, not just the miles.
