Last Thursday a retired diesel mechanic brought his 1985 Ford F-250 into my bay in Amarillo, and while I was checking a no-start he noticed me fighting to hear a cylinder with a stethoscope, so he grabbed a long flathead screwdriver and put the handle to his ear and the tip on the injector and called out the dead one in about 10 seconds. I started using the screwdriver trick on everything now, and it has saved me way more time than the $40 stethoscope sitting in my box. What old school tricks did you learn from somebody who didn't even charge you for the lesson?

My uncle Earl in Abilene used a broomstick to hear lifters back in 79, same idea, different tool lol.
