A retired guy in Tulsa made me admit my $400 torque wrench wasn't the problem
Honestly I was dead set against click type torque wrenches for years and would argue with anybody at the shop who brought it up. Then a retired diesel guy named Ray came by our shop in Tulsa last April to pick up his truck and watched me fighting a head bolt for 20 minutes. He said 'son, the tool ain't the issue, you're not pulling smooth' and had me try his old beam style wrench on one bolt to prove it. I hit the spec on the first try and felt like a fool standing there. Tbh I always thought beam wrenches were for cheap tools and old timers, but it was me rushing the pull the entire time. Now I keep one in my box for final passes and my come backs on head jobs dropped to almost nothing. Has anyone else had a tool they hated turn out to just be teaching them something?
