Customer's torque wrench was 50 ft-lbs off, nearly ruined my repair

Had a guy bring in his 2015 F-150 last Tuesday, wanted me to check why his lug nuts kept coming loose. Grabbed his own torque wrench off the seat to show me what he was using. Turns out it was clicking at 100 ft-lbs when he set it to 150, been dropping them by hand for months. I got out my Snap-On and showed him the difference on the spot. Anyone else had a customer's tool cause more problems than it fixed?

Calibrated a guy's Craftsman for free, saved his engine rebuild.

Ruined my friend's torque wrench once by messing with the zero adjustment without reading the manual first. Told him it was "fine" and he snapped a bolt clean off his head gasket job. Still owe him a case of beer over that. Ever get that sinking feeling when you realize you were the problem all along?

Got a guy I work with who had his torque wrench fail mid job once? I started keeping a spare loaner in my box for situations exactly like this. Saved a couple other DIYers from wrecking their projects too.
