Finally swapped out the old incandescent bulbs in my shop for LEDs last winter

My power bill dropped by almost $80 a month, and I can actually see the threads on a 10mm bolt in the back corner now. Anyone else make a small change in their bay that had a bigger payoff than expected?

My old fridge was costing me like $50 a month to run. Got a new one and the bill dropped by half. It's wild how the old stuff just bleeds money.

That's a huge drop, but winter bills are usually higher anyway from heating.

Yeah, winter heating does add up. But when you saw that drop, was it still a big difference compared to your bills from last winter? Just curious if the fridge change really cut through the usual seasonal spike.

People always jump to replace old appliances and pat themselves on the back... but winter heating costs can really muddy the numbers though. If your heat bill went up by $60 and your fridge savings were only $25, you'd still be paying more overall. I've seen folks swap out a perfectly good ten year old fridge just to save $10 a month and that takes years to pay off. Plus new fridges have their own issues with compressors dying after a few years now... nothing is built like the old stuff. So unless your old fridge was literally melting food or running nonstop, I'd say keep it and just skip one takeout meal instead.
