I finally figured out why my brake jobs kept coming back with noise
For years I just slapped new pads and rotors on, cleaned the hub face a bit, and called it good. A month ago, a customer brought back his F-150 for the third time with a low hum that started after 500 miles. I put it on the lift and used a dial indicator on the hub itself, not the rotor. The runout was 0.008 inches, way over spec. The hub was the problem the whole time. I never checked it before installing new parts. Anyone else get tricked by a warped hub flange?

A mechanic friend swears by checking hubs first now (after a similar headache).

Same, learned that lesson with a bad wheel bearing.

Ever notice how the simplest fix is often the last thing we check? We'll chase some complex, expensive solution when the real problem was something basic and cheap the whole time (like a loose hub). I see it everywhere, from tech support to home repairs. It's like our brains are wired to overcomplicate things first. Your friend learning to check the hubs first is a small win against that whole trend.
