That guy who torqued every bolt with his foot, lesson learned at a shop in Fresno

I watched this older mechanic at a transmission shop in Fresno just snug up bellhousing bolts with his boot, no torque wrench. I called him out and he said the torque spec was for engineers, not for people who know the feel. A month later that same trans came back with stripped threads in the case. Now I torque everything, even oil pan bolts. Anyone else got a story about a shortcut that backfired?
