Warning: the old guy at the Daytona tire seminar talked me out of torque sticks
Sat through a demo in Daytona back in March where a 30 year tire vet showed us 4 lugs we torqued with sticks that were 15 lbs short of spec on a Ram 1500. Now I hand torque every wheel and my comeback rate for loose lug complaints dropped to basically zero, anyone else ditch the sticks or am I just slow now?
Had the same thing happen at a shop I worked at years ago. We had a set of torque sticks that were "close enough" until a customer came back with a wheel that almost walked off a Silverado. Started checking them against a real wrench and some were off by 20 plus pounds. Boss didn't want to hear it at first but after the second comeback he bought two good torque wrenches and we checked them every Monday. Took maybe an extra minute per car and nobody ever complained about loose lugs again. The sticks are fine for getting them snug, but I still finish with the wrench on every single one.
