Chose a used standalone ECU over a piggyback for my turbo build, and the first datalog actually made sense
I finally had to pick last month after saving up for about 8 months. My budget was $900, and I was stuck between a used standalone and a new piggyback for my 2002 WRX. The piggyback was cheap and plug and play, but a guy at the shop in Sacramento told me I would hate it once I added more boost. I went with the standalone even though the wiring scared me. It took two weekends and a lot of cursing on the harness. First start was rough, but after fixing a ground it idled clean. The first datalog showed my AFR was all over the place, and I could actually fix it myself. Anyone here run a standalone on a daily and regret it, or was it worth the wiring headache?
Man, that first clean datalog is such a good feeling. I read a thread on NASIOC a while back where a bunch of guys said the same thing you did, that a piggyback works fine until you start pushing more boost and then it fights you every step. The wiring part scares people off but once it is done you never touch it again. Having real control over fuel and timing instead of tricking the stock computer is a totally different world. Two weekends of cursing beats months of guessing what the car is doing.
