Guy at a dyno day in Phoenix told me to ditch the cheap catch can setup, and my oil analysis proved him right 8 weeks later
I was running a $40 vented can off Amazon for like 2 years on my boosted setup. Made decent power, no obvious problems. This older dude with a beat up Evo walks over at a dyno day in Phoenix last spring, looks at my engine bay and goes "you're pulling unmetered air through that thing, check your fuel trims at idle." I brushed it off, thought he was just being a know it all. Fast forward 8 weeks, Blackstone report comes back with fuel dilution at 3.2 percent. My long term fuel trims were sitting at plus 12 at idle the whole time and I never even scanned it. Swapped to a proper sealed can with a check valve and PCV routed right, trims went back to plus 2. Man was just right. I hate that I ignored him for 2 months. Anyone else ever get humbled by a random dude at the track who just knows his stuff?
My buddy had the same thing happen with a beat up Miata guy at a track day who told him his blow off valve was set up wrong, and he blew him off too until his turbo started eating oil. Two weeks later he pulled the intake and it was full of oil, dude was spot on. Sometimes the guy in the crusty car has forgotten more than we'll ever know.
