Ran a drop-in K&N on my 2016 WRX for a week, then swapped back to the stock airbox
I figured I would try the cheap route before spending $400 on a real intake kit, so I grabbed a drop-in filter for about $50 and ran it for a week around Fort Collins. The intake sound was louder at wide open throttle, but the logs I pulled with my Accessport showed almost no gain in airflow and the fuel trims were a little worse than stock. Cold start idle got rough too, which I did not expect from a filter. I put the paper filter back in on Sunday and the car just feels smoother down low, probably because the stock box is not fighting the tune the way the drop-in was. What I got out of this is that a filter alone does not do much on these cars, the real gains come from a proper tune and maybe a full intake if you are chasing noise anyway. Has anyone here actually seen real power on a dyno from just a drop-in on an FA20, or is it pretty much accepted as a waste of money?
