The old tuner in Tacoma told me to stop chasing peak boost and learn to read a datalog first
I was 19 with a beat up WRX and a MBC cranked way past safe, and he watched me blow a head gasket in his parking lot on a Saturday back in 2011. He didn't yell at me, just pointed at my laptop and said the tune tells you more than the butt dyno ever will, then spent two hours showing me how fuel trims and knock correction actually work. How many of you learned the hard way that the numbers on a screen matter more than the seat of your pants?
Did you ever go back and look at the logs after you popped it? That was the part that got me. I did the same dumb stuff in my 240 and it was the fuel trims that finally made it click. My wideband was reading pig rich up top while my trims were pulling fuel everywhere else, which meant I was fixing the wrong problem the whole time. Once I started logging every drive and just watching knock and AFR, my car stopped eating plugs.
