DAE find a $40 mechanical crimper beats the ratcheting one on tiny pins?
Last month I was redoing a cannon plug on a King Air and fought the ratcheting crimper for an hour on size 22 contacts before a guy at the shop in Wichita handed me his old mechanical one. It seated every pin in like ten minutes with way less hand cramping and no wasted contacts from missed cycles. Has anyone else noticed the cheap mechanical tool outdoing the fancy ratcheting one on the little stuff, or am I crazy?
That "no wasted contacts from missed cycles" part is huge, those ratcheting tools eat pins every time you don't get a full squeeze. Learning to feel the crimp on a mechanical one makes you way faster once it clicks, especially when you're doing a whole plug at once.
