Mid-flight comms test convinced me to skip the fancy harness
I talked with a retired Navy tech at a hangar in Wichita last week. He said the best troubleshooting he ever did was with a $30 multimeter and a broken 1970s test set, not the new digital stuff. It hit different because he showed me how a loose ground pin on an old connector was causing intermittent dropouts that everyone blamed on software. For years I chased firmware updates and bought expensive adapters, but he was right that checking the physical layer first saves hours. Anyone else ever gone back to basic gear after a veteran tech pointed out the obvious?

Ha! Yeah, nothing like a salty old tech to make you feel like a fool with a $4,000 laptop and zero clue. I once chased a ghost in a machine for two days, swapping every module except the one cable I was too proud to wiggle. Turned out the damn thing just needed a good push and a zip tie. The fancy stuff is great until it tells you everything is fine while the lights are literally blinking in Morse code for help. These old timers are basically wizards who learned the magic before everyone started trusting the glowing screens.
