My neighbor asked if I could fix his TV because I work on planes

I was talking to him over the fence and he found out what I do for a living. He straight up asked if I could take a look at his busted television set. It's like, hello, avionics is about complex systems that keep planes safe, not home electronics. Then my friend thought I could tweak his sound system because it has cables too. Do they think we just play with wires all day? It gets old when people don't get the training and rules we follow. How do you deal with stuff like this?

Got a similar vibe when I told someone I fix computers. They asked if I could look at their coffee maker because it has a circuit board lol. Makes you wonder if they think we're just magical appliance people.

Guess they figure if it plugs in, you must know the secret codes. Makes you wonder what other everyday stuff they think is just hidden tech, like microwaves being secretly super computers. Kinda weird but also a little scary?

Did you catch that podcast episode about why people confuse tech fields? They said it's because outsiders only see the tools, not the years of specific training. @the_william nailed it with the microwave super computer comparison, like everything with a plug is suddenly the same. It must be frustrating when your real expertise gets boiled down to just knowing about cables.
