Talk with a 20 year avionics vet changed how I look at pin repairs

Was griping about a bad pin on a D-sub connector last Tuesday and this older guy told me 'you're not fixing the pin, you're fixing the signal path.' Made me slow down and actually check the crimp tool calibration. Anyone else have a simple comment that made you rethink your whole approach?

That bit about "you're not fixing the pin, you're fixing the signal path" hits different when you've been burned by a bad crimp on a critical line, yeah @aliceharris? Had a similar thing happen with a coax connector where the guy just said "you're not connecting the wire, you're connecting the system" and it made me stop treating repairs like they're independent.

Roll your eyes all you want but a pin repair isn't some mystical signal path thing. It's a piece of metal in a hole. If you crimped it right and it's making contact you're done. People overthink this stuff to feel important. That guy probably just wanted to sound wise over a cup of coffee.

@margaretc42 thinks impedance doesn't exist until you measure it?
