Can we talk about the guy at the Springer Mountain shelter who gave me his extra food?
I started my first solo section hike of the Georgia AT in March, planning to do 40 miles in 4 days. On the second night at the Springer Mountain shelter, an older hiker named Ray noticed my food bag was lighter than it should be. He handed me two extra packets of tuna and a snickers bar and said, "No one makes it through the hills on ego alone." I finished the whole section without running out of food, and I still think about that small act. Has anyone else had a stranger on trail bail them out like that?
