Got roasted by a thru-hiker for my bear bag hang and now I do it different

Last summer on the John Muir Trail a guy in his 60s watched me toss a line over a branch and just laughed. He said my bag was way too close to the trunk and any bear could just climb up and grab it. He showed me the PCT method with a longer stick to get the rope further out on the branch. Has anyone else had their setup totally picked apart by someone with more experience on the trail?

Man that's rough, but old timers usually know their stuff.

Doesn't it seem like we put way too much stock in anyone who's just been around a long time? I've noticed it's the same with old cars, people assume they're built better just because they're from the 70s. But a lot of that stuff is just rust and bad gas mileage. Experience matters, sure, but it's not a guarantee of anything.

Are you sure age automatically makes someone an expert? I get what you mean @parker_hall5, but I've seen some old timers who were just as clueless as the rest of us.
