Heard a ranger at the Olympic National Park visitor center say something that made me pause

He was telling a group that the popular Hoh River Trail to Blue Glacier has had a 40% jump in overnight permits this year. He said a lot of new folks are heading up there without checking the current river crossing reports, and the snowmelt is still high. Has anyone done that route in the last few weeks and seen the crossing near Glacier Meadows?

I actually crossed it on June 12th and found it manageable, just above the knee. The key was going about a quarter mile upstream from the main trail crossing where the river braids out. It took some scouting but the wider channel there was much slower.

Yikes, my buddy turned back there last week, said the current was scary.

Scary is putting it lightly, @campbell.thea. That spot has a real nasty pull even on a calm day. Your buddy was smart to turn around, because that's exactly how people get into trouble they can't get out of. It's like folks see a warning sign and take it as a personal challenge instead of good advice. Makes you wonder what it takes for people to just listen.

Ugh, that tracks, people are always ignoring warning signs these days.
