I was sure the Wind River High Route would be too much for me...
I always thought those off-trail routes were for real experts, not someone like me who just does a few trips a year. But last August, I tried the first 40 miles of it starting from Big Sandy, and the navigation was way more straightforward than I expected with a good map. The views from Texas Pass were absolutely insane and made the scramble totally worth it. Has anyone else been surprised by a route they thought was out of their league?

Honestly, that's awesome to hear. I feel like a lot of those famous routes get built up in our heads as impossible until you just take the first step. I had the same thing happen on the Teton Crest Trail last summer, totally thought I'd be in over my head with the elevation. Turns out just moving slow and steady got me through it, and the payoff was unreal. It's a good reminder to not let the hype scare you off.

Yeah, that "slow and steady" thing is so true... cora813's buddy nailed it too. Just gotta start walking.

Totally. My buddy had that happen on the Wonderland Trail. He spent months stressing over the mileage, then just... did it. Said the same thing about just putting one foot in front of the other.
