Used to just eyeball water crossings like an idiot till a river in Colorado swept my pack downstream last June.
Now I actually take 5 minutes to scout for a safe spot and keep my dry bag sealed tight, anyone else learn that lesson the hard way?

Honestly, I did the same thing in Alaska last year.

Wait, did you actually fly in there or did you just drive around on the logging roads? Because Alaska is way different than the lower 48 when it comes to wildlife. You can't just stop and walk up to moose like they're tame, especially not in spring when they're grumpy with calves. People get killed every year doing that stuff up there. I'd double check your route if you're planning another trip, some of those old mining roads are sketchy even for experienced folks.

Wait, you did what in Alaska last year? You walked right up to a moose or something? Because that's literally the kind of thing that gets people trampled or gored, I'm not joking. I've seen videos of tourists getting chased down parking lots in Anchorage because they thought the moose was "friendly." Those things are six feet tall at the shoulder and have no problem charging cars, let alone people. Are you sure you didn't just see a really big deer from a hundred yards away?
