Went in expecting rain on the Lost Coast, got 3 days of sun instead
I finally did the northern stretch from Mattole Beach to Shelter Cove near the end of October. The forecast said rain every day so I packed my full shell and extra socks, but it never dropped past a few tiny spritzes, temps hit 72 near the bluffs. I learned to stop trusting the long range forecast for coastal routes and just layer with a light pack. Has anyone else had a season where the weather apps were totally backwards on the Pacific coast?
Three days of sun on the Lost Coast in late October sounds like the forecast gods just gave up entirely. I've seen the same thing happen with the marine layer in Mendocino, where the apps call for fog all week and you get blue sky by 10am every single day. It makes me wonder how many plans people cancel based on a forecast that's basically guessing. Weather models seem to struggle the most right where ocean meets land, since the temps and wind can flip within a mile. There's a lesson in there about how we trust the little screen more than the window, and honestly I do it with way more than weather.
