Appreciation post: my backyard tomatoes finally beat the store ones, and it took killing my lawn to do it
Everyone on here says you need raised beds and fancy soil to grow good tomatoes, and I think that is mostly a waste of money. Last spring I ripped out about 300 square feet of grass in my yard in Fresno and planted 9 Roma and Cherokee Purple plants straight into the dirt with nothing but compost from my kitchen. For the first 6 weeks they looked awful and I figured I had blown it, but by mid July I was pulling 4 to 5 pounds of fruit every other day. The neighbor who told me my yard looked like a dump is now asking for seeds. The store ones cost $2.50 a pound here and taste like wet cardboard next to these. Anyone else skip the raised beds and just plant in the ground, or am I the only one who thinks the boxes are overrated?
