Chat with my neighbor made me realize I've been overwatering my garden for 3 years straight

He pointed out my soil was soggy 2 inches down and said 'roots need to breathe too' and now I'm wondering how many plants I killed with too much love - anyone else ever get a basic garden fact this wrong this long?

Wait did I read somewhere that overwatering actually drowns the roots by filling up all the air pockets in the soil? I heard this gardening tip on a podcast the other day, the guy said most people kill houseplants by watering too much not too little. Three years is a long time though, bet your soil is pretty compacted by now from all that water sitting there. You might want to dig up a couple plants and check how the roots look, if they're mushy or brown that's root rot from drowning basically.

Three years of soggy soil sounds like prime mosquito breeding territory.

Ha! @ryan_hart38, you'd have your own swamp ecosystem going.
