Gave up on grass seed after 3 failed tries, then my neighbor in Tucson told me one weird thing
I have been fighting a dead patch in my backyard for almost a year now and I was about to just pour concrete over the whole thing. I tried the fancy seed, the cheap seed, the stuff with the coating on it, and nothing worked. Every time I watered it like crazy the birds just ate it or it dried up in a day. My neighbor Ray finally came over and asked why I was watering so shallow, and I had no idea what he meant. He told me to water way less often but soak it deep, like 20 minutes in one spot, and to do it early in the morning before the heat hits. I tried it on a 4 by 8 foot test patch and within 3 weeks I had actual green grass coming up. Turns out the roots were staying right at the surface and frying, which is why nothing ever survived. He also said to stop dumping seed on top of dry dirt and rough up the top inch with a rake first. Now I am doing the whole yard this way, one section at a time, and it is actually working. Anyone else have a neighbor drop some random wisdom that made you feel dumb for not knowing it sooner?
