Hot take: I was wrong about raised garden beds after 3 seasons of fighting mine
Three years ago I built four cedar raised beds in my backyard in Tulsa and swore I'd never go back to digging in the ground. Last month my neighbor Dale let me help with his in-ground rows while my back was out from hauling soil bags, and I noticed his tomatoes were taller than mine with way less watering. I did the math and figured out I'd put about $340 into dirt, liners, and lumber, plus two summers of refilling beds that drain dry by August. Last week I ripped out two of my boxes and planted straight into the clay, mixed with compost, and those seedlings have doubled in size in nine days. The one thing I'll keep raised is my herbs since the mint goes wild underground. Anyone else switch back to planting in the ground after years of boxes, and did your soil ever catch up?
