I finally figured out why my tomatoes kept cracking and it was my own fault the whole time
So I've been growing tomatoes in containers on my back patio in Tucson for about four summers now and every single year I'd get these big ugly cracks across the tops right before they were ready to pick. I just figured it was the heat, you know, 105 degrees in July does weird stuff to plants. Then last month my neighbor Rosa came over to borrow a ladder and she looked at my pots and asked how often I water. I said every morning, a good soak, same time every day. She kind of laughed and said that was the problem, the cracks come from the soil going from bone dry to soaked over and over. She told me to stick my finger down two inches before watering instead of just doing it on a schedule. Turns out my soil was still wet most mornings and I was drowning them. I switched to checking first and only watering when it was actually dry, and I haven't seen a single crack in three weeks. Anyone else had a plant problem that turned out to be something totally different than what you assumed?
